Michael Dillon’s discharge papers show that:
§He joined the 1st/11th (North Devonshire) Regiment of Foot in Belfast in 1808.
§His army record says he was from Kilmallock in Limerick.
§He was 21 at the time
§He was discharged in May 1832 and his age was recorded as 45 yrs and 9 months making his date of birth approx Aug 1787
§He served in the Walcheren campaign during the Napoleonic Wars. Walcheren was an island of the Netherlands at the mouth of the Scheldt River. The campaign was intended to capture the area where the Napoleonic fleet was being built but it ended in tragedy. The British expedition under Lord Chatham captured the island on 30th July 1809 but had to retire the following December having lost 7,000 men to marsh fever.
§The Regimental pay records (muster books) show that he was stationed in Gibraltar from at least March 1816 (possibly earlier) to at least Sept 1819 (possibly later). This would correspond with his son Robert being born in Gibraltar in July / August 1816. His discharge suggests he was stationed there for about 10 years.
§He was discharged on medical grounds suffering from rheumatism and the comments of the Principal Medical Officer where that:
‘After treatment of one month in hospital I am of the opinion that Michael Dillon is unfit for service and that he is likely to be permanently disqualified for military duty’.
His disability was ‘contracted in the service without being attributable to neglect, design, vice or intemperance’.
§His discharge papers state that:
‘The Regimental Board is of opinion that his conduct has been that of a good soldier trustworthy and sober’.
§During his service he was promoted and reduced in rank on several occasions. He was a corporal for almost seven years and a sergeant for almost three years although he ended his career as a private. | Dillon, Michael (I251)
